Within the field of Japanese history, Prof. Takahashi specializes in the history of samurai political power as well as the place that samurai political power that occupied within the political power as whole within the ruling court. He has paid attention to the organization of the samurai political power as one part, approaching the characteristics of system of the lower-ranking vassals of the Kamakura Shogunate was approached from a military side. The results of this research were summarized in his book Kamakura Shogunate Military System and the Lower-ranking Vassal System. Furthermore, when we discuss the history of the Kamakura Shogunate, although the Azuma kagami is an indispensable historical material, rather than studying only the Azuma kagami itself, we have to read it in the context of the Heike monogatari and other works of the period. Also, recently, he has expanded his approach of historiographical consideration to include social and regional perspectives, continuing by looking at the process of establishment and the distinctive aspects of the Muromachi Shogunate, tying this together with the period of the Northern and Southern courts, starting from the Mongol invasions of the latter part of the 13th century up to the and 14th century.
