Hiroaki Nagashima

Professor (Japanese Literature, Center for Evolving Humanities)

Prof. Nagashima has been broadly researching both prose and poetry of the Edo period, with a special interest in the men of letters and their works that appeared in the eighteenth century. In particular, he has studied the works of Ueda Akinari, Yosa Buson, Hiraga Gennai, and others. The focus of his detailed research into the literature of these men of letters is to clarify the significance of the distinctive features of the intimate relationship of the thought and scholarship, the blending of humor and instruction, the struggle between tradition and new innovation, in the works of Edo period literature. Among his book publications are Akinari kenkyu, Ugetsu monogatari no sekai, Kokugo bungaku kenkyū no seiritsu, >Koten nyūmon, and others.
